Program Description

Location:
Seven counties of the Denver and Boulder metropolitan areas. View map

Program size:
The Colorado program inspects over 900,000 vehicles each year.

Contract term:
Began January 1995. Ends December 31, 2010.

The Colorado vehicle inspection program is highly sophisticated and includes a remote sensing "clean screen" program, in addition to an extensive underhood inspection. The major features of our Colorado program include:

  • Rigorous Test Procedures: An extensive underhood inspection, including the O2 sensor, which on some vehicles is behind the engine firewall - one of the most comprehensive and difficult-to-perform tests in the country in a high-throughput program.

  • Remote Sensing Study: ESP helped the State of Colorado investigate the use of remote sensing in vehicle inspection programs. To find out more about remote sensing technology used in Colorado, visit www.aircarecolorado.com/rapidscreen/index.html.

  • Clean Screen: ESP uses remote sensing technology to clean screen vehicles, exempting clean-running vehicles from their station-based emissions test. Colorado's RapidScreen remote sensing program "clean screens" more than 30 percent of the vehicles registered in the enhanced inspection area.
