When a vehicle passes through infrared and ultraviolet beams directed across the roadway, the system automatically:
- Reads its exhaust plume in less than a second.
- Determines concentrations of HC, CO, CO2, NO and calculates a smoke factor.
- Records and stores the data for later retrieval.
- Captures an image of the vehicle's license plate for reference.
- Records the passing vehicle's speed and acceleration for measurement validation.
The entire process takes about 0.7 seconds, which means that the AccuScan 4600 can measure the emissions of up to 2,000 vehicles each hour.
